Loire region
The region
Chateaux and towns
The region is well known for its huge range of chateaux, from the defensive fortress at Chinon to the fairytale Ussé and the world famous gardens at Villandry. Other favourites are the “upside-down” Brézé (the fortified area is largely below ground level!), Saumur on its lofty perch above the Loire, and further afield but still within a comfortable day trip Blois and Chenonceau.
The local villages and towns are a joy in their own right. Chinon and Saumur are each just 20 minutes away. Richelieu takes the visitor back to the time of the famous Cardinal who founded it, with its grid system and grand houses built for his friends.
Rivers and woods
The Loire is only 4km away, and just a few steps further is the confluence of the Loire and the Vienne. Kayaking and canoeing on the Loire and Vienne are available. The Vienne is particularly suitable for families who can enjoy the gentle waters.
There is an excellent network of cycle paths – the Loire is a popular cycling area - and the region also provides numerous walks of varying lengths. Cycles can be hired, and delivered to the house.
Also to enjoy out of doors:
Golf - just a few km down the road at an attractive 18 hole golf course.
Birdwatching - especially on the Loire.
Other attractions
The French national riding school – the Cadre Noir – just 20 minutes away at the beautiful town of Saumur, offering stable visits and shows.
The Bioparc at Doué la Fontaine - a remarkable animal park in luxuriant vegetation in a former stone quarry.
Troglodyte or cave dwellings to visit and, in some cases, to dine in.
Vineyards to visit to tour, taste and buy - or find one of the local “caves” offering a range of local wines.
Futuroscope at Poitiers, just an hour away
The extraordinary history theme park at Puy du Fou, about 1hr30 away - well worth a day trip
