Fontevraud - village and abbey
Fontevraud’s picturesque village square is less than 300 metres away, complete with elegant town hall and fountain, and overlooked by the ancient parish church. The square is served by 2 bars, 3 restaurants and a tea room, together with a classic bakery and a mini-supermarket.
The entrance to the Royal Abbey is on the square.
The abbey is said to be the largest in Europe, and is now a national monument and part of the Loire Valley UNESCO world heritage site. It is the final resting place of Richard the Lion-heart, Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine; their grave effigies are on display in the abbey church.
The abbey has an intriguing history to be explored, including its time as a prison. The immaculately restored buildings and cloisters are surrounded by delightful gardens, and there is a rich programme of cultural events.
